A study abroad experience can be exciting and enriching. Discovering new cultures and seeing a different country is a great way to add to the study aboard educational experience. Be sure to consider international student health insurance to protect against unexpected illness or injury before leaving for a study abroad program.

When traveling abroad, students can be at a higher risk for emergencies, making international student insurance coverage extremely important. With new environments and unknown sanitary conditions, students can be more susceptible to illness or injury.

Many students don’t realize that the insurance plan that they have in their home country most likely doesn’t cover them when they are traveling in a different country. Being in a stressful situation like being injured or becoming ill in an unfamiliar environment can be frightening when a student is alone. With an international student health insurance plan, you can save money and stress if an emergency situation comes up.

When a student is studying abroad, typical international student health insurance plans cover emergency care for injuries or illnesses that occur. These plans offer coverage for medically necessary treatments, including those that require hospital stays and doctor care. In the case of a political emergency, some plans also include coverage for costs that are incurred as a result of having to return from a trip early.

It’s critical to consider everything that you need when preparing for a study abroad program, including insurance and emergency contact info. As reported by the Center for Disease Control, all students should be prepared with their current vaccination record, emergency contact information and any prescriptions that are required prior to leaving for their destination.

Students should also prepare or purchase a first aid kit in addition to purchasing study abroad insurance, including items like hand sanitizer, bandages and everyday first aid items.

When you are traveling overseas, the only way to protect yourself is to purchase international student insurance. Any illness or injury can be excessively stressful when a student is away from home. You and your family can be prepared by having insurance and can feel confident that you will be taken care of should an emergency situation occur.

If you are planning to participate in a study abroad program, be sure to include purchasing international student health insurance in your plans. Doing so will allow you to relax and get the most out of your experience, without having to worry about the unexpected.
